Alright students, we need to talk. Have you heard about the dangers of identity theft in your life? No, identity theft is not something that only limited to your parents, billionaires, and old people who have nothing better to then give $50,000 to someone who won’t fix their roof. In fact, if you are a student then you have got to know that you are now a main target for those people who like to steal identities. You know why you are a main target? It is because people in your age group do not care enough about this stuff to protect it. They think they have better things to worry about and that it will not affect them. Bullhonkey! Identity theft can strike you as a student. The following are some of the ways it can happen, and what you can do to stop it.
This is a big one. When you enroll in school you will be given a student ID number. This number is your access to all your personal school stuff. A lot of schools are getting out of the habit of using your Social Security Number, but if your school still does then you need to stop it! Get them to give you some other number that begins with 993, or 432, or 553, or basically any number that is not your SSN. Once you have this number (that is not your SSN!) then you must keep it safe. You do not want anybody to have access to your file where they can view your financial records with the school, your address and any other important item. You’re not in high school anymore Dorothy….keep the number safe.
Why are you in school? Yeah, you would think that you are there to get an education, but some of your peers will tell you that it is to party! Ok, go out, and have a good time. While you are out you need to be smart. Sure, be smart while partying, but we are talking about financial safety. If you are going to take out your wallet/purse then you need to watch it! Do not leave your credit cards, driver license, or anything else of financial importance just lying around. Some less then stellar human being will pick it up and use it to access your finances and whatnot. Then before you know it there is someone who is using your name who is also using and destroying your finances. Do not be a dummy. If you are going to party then make sure that your identity does not leave the building before you do!
You want to go through college and leave successfully right? This means that you will be setting yourself for a good position in America’s noble workforce. Identity theft can set you back from entering the corporate world. You do not want to have to pay off a bunch of debt that you did not even have the luxury of spending! Identity theft is probably something that one of those losers at (insert your rival school) would do! But you are a proud members of (insert your school) Tech/University/A&M/State/Business School/Community College. Stand up and show them what you are made of.
