4 Scholarship Scams To Avoid

A scholarship can truly be a great thing. It can help you go to college when you otherwise could not afford to. There are so many scholarship opportunities, many of which go unused every year. But, when you look for financial aid you need to watch out for some scams. These scams are not really worth your time and you need to pay attention. You do not want to be scammed out of help for college.

Scholarships that Cost Money

If you are offered the opportunity to win a scholarship for a small fee, forget it! Companies will say you can win at least $1000 for the college of your choice. All it will cost you is a small fee (maybe up to $400). But these scholarships will not be better then any of the scholarships you can apply for, for free. Don’t give them a chance to skip out with your money.

Needing a Credit Card Number for this Scholarship

No, no, no! You should not give them access to your bank account or credit card just for a scholarship. Essentially you are giving them permission to withdraw money, when they should be giving you money. Remember, you should never give money away in exchange for the opportunity to get a scholarship.

“You’re a Finalist!”

This is something you may receive, even though you have not applied for this scholarship. How can you be a finalist for something you have never heard of? Legitimate scholarships will not seek you out; it is a waste of time for them. If they are coming to you, then you probably should look else where.

“Guaranteed” or “Your Money Back”

If you pay a fee, we will get you a scholarship you can use or your money back! Sure they will. Do not think that they will give you any money back. So don’t give them any money!

Scholarships are Meant to Help

Something that is meant to help should not come back to hurt you. Keep an eye out for scams, because they are possible. You should not be hesitant to get a scholarship, just make sure it is the right fit for you. Ask questions and get to know the process. That way you will not be scammed.
